JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, will open an Emergency Family Assistance Center (EFAC) Monday, Oct. 15. The EFAC will be manned with Navy counselors prepared to assist evacuated military personnel and their families that are staying on or near the installation.

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Guided-missile destroyer USS Shoup (DDG 86) will arrive in Suva as part of the ship’s Oceania Maritime Security Initiative (OMSI) deployment, Oct. 14. While in Suva, USS Shoup will host a formal reception, highlighting the partnership between the U.S. Navy and country of Fiji, as well as Shoup’s OMSI mission. Shoup Sailors will also conduct professional exchanges with Fijian sailors and participate in community events during the port visit.

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) approved the first metal part created by additive manufacturing (AM) for shipboard installation, the command announced Oct. 11. A prototype drain strainer orifice (DSO) assembly will be installed on USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) in fiscal year 2019 for a one-year test and evaluation trial. The DSO assembly is a steam system component that permits drainage/removal of water from a steam line while in use.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Commander, Navy Region Southeast Rear Adm. Bette Bolivar has designated the area within 150 miles of Gulfport, Mississippi, as the remote safe haven for personnel and families who evacuated due to Hurricane Michael, effective Oct. 9.
MONTEREY (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer announced today that retired Vice Adm. Ann Elisabeth Rondeau will be the next president of the Naval Postgraduate School. Spencer made the announcement during an all-hands call with NPS students and faculty where he praised Rondeau for her proven experience as an educator.
INDIAN OCEAN (NNS) -- The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Decatur (DDG 73) rendered assistance to seven distressed mariners, Oct. 7 - 8, whose fishing boat had suffered an engine malfunction, rendering the vessel inoperable. Decatur was conducting a routine patrol Oct. 7, in the waters south of Sri Lanka when watch standers sighted a fishing vessel with fishermen onboard frantically waving rags in the air.
